🎸 How to Play Fret Rush

Train yourself to find any note on the fretboard — fast.

Getting Started

Fret Rush is an interactive training tool designed to help guitarists memorise the fretboard. The app presents you with an on-screen fretboard — just like a real guitar — and challenges you to find notes by clicking the correct frets.

No downloads or sign-ups are needed. Everything runs in your browser.

Tip for beginners: Start with Find Notes: Range to build positional memory in small sections, then move to Find Notes: Speed once you're comfortable across the full neck.

Understanding the Fretboard

A standard guitar has 6 strings, tuned (from thickest to thinnest) to E, A, D, G, B, and E. The fretboard displays frets 0 (open string) through 12. Fret markers — the dots you see on real guitars — appear at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 (double dot) to help you orientate yourself.

Each fret raises the pitch by one semitone. At fret 12 you reach the octave — the same note name as the open string, one octave higher.

Learning the fretboard is one of the most valuable things a guitarist can do. Once you know where every note is, you can find any scale, chord, or interval anywhere on the neck without having to think about it.

Training Modes

🎯

Find Notes: Range

You're given a note name and a highlighted 4-fret window. Find every occurrence within the window. Builds positional memory in focused sections — ideal for beginners.

⚡

Find Notes:Speed

Find every instance of a named note across all 6 strings and 12 frets as fast as possible. One wrong answer ends the round. Builds automatic recall for real playing.

🔥

Fret Rush

Fill every position on the fretboard one note at a time. The ultimate full-neck workout — you have to find all 78 positions as fast as you can.

Scoring

Every correct answer adds 10 points. Your streak (consecutive correct rounds without a miss) is tracked separately — one wrong answer resets it to zero.

Tips for Learning the Fretboard

1. Learn the natural notes first

Focus on A, B, C, D, E, F, G before sharps and flats. Once you know the naturals, the sharps and flats fall in between.

2. Use octave shapes

Two strings up and two frets right always lands on the same note one octave higher (strings 6→4 and 5→3). Learning this pattern lets you locate any note instantly.

3. Anchor on open strings and the 12th fret

The open strings (E A D G B E) and 12th fret repeat the same notes. Use fret markers at 5, 7, and 9 as reference points.

4. Practice a little every day

Short, consistent sessions beat occasional long ones. Even 10 minutes a day produces noticeable results within a few weeks.

Recommended progression: Start with Find Notes — Range until you can clear any window without mistakes, then switch to Find Notes — Speed and chase your best time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know music theory?

No. Both modes work purely on fretboard geography — you're simply asked to find a named note.

Does the app work on mobile?

Yes. The fretboard scales to fit smaller screens. Tap a fret to select it, just as you would click on desktop.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your accuracy, round count, best time, and streak are saved in your browser's local storage and persist between sessions.

What tuning does the app use?

Standard tuning: E A D G B e (low to high).
